Media Center

The PLS Film Center (later Video Center and now Media Center) was formed in 1979 in order to consolidate the PLS libraries 16mm film collections into one agency. In 1981 videocassettes were added to the collection and rapidly overtook 16mm films in circulation.  In 1990 , the 16mm film collection was disbanded and the name of the Center was changed to the Video Center since that was all we were circulating at the time. In 1993, the Video Center outgrew its location and moved into the Marina Branch Library in San Mateo. In 2003 the name of the Video Center was changed to Media Center. The Media Center Marina location closed for rennovation, and the video collection was moved to the San Mateo Main Library temporary location site at 1100 Park Place at the Bay Meadows Complex on 2 September 2003.

Online Media Center Catalog
You can browse the Media Center full line of video materials online.  Our four large categories are Feature Films, Children's videos, Special Interest videos, and Instructional videos.  We carry most of the new feature films released on video, although not all, and we strive to collect children's videos that commercial rental outlets do not carry, giving our collection many times the breadth of usual video rental collection.

Location
The Media Center is located in the Marina Branch of the San Mateo City Library.  We have rented space here since October 1994 and we are very happy with our cooperative staffing and building sharing.  If you are familiar with San Mateo you know that we are located right next door to the Fish Market Restaurant off Norfolk in San Mateo on the east side of Highway 101.  If you are from farther away you can see our map, read our text directions, or call us at 650.522.7870 and we'll get you here.

Hours

Please note: The Media Center is neither a video retailer nor a distributor. Our videos are for circulation among Peninsula Library System cardholders.

The Online Catalog is telling me that Media Center items are checked in, but when I go to the Video Center they aren't there. What gives?

The Media Center operates a little differently than libraries. They use a "reservation" system instead of the usual "hold" system for books and that information is kept on a separate computer. The Media Center sends its materials to all of the PLS main branch libraries. If they've sent an item to another library for a patron and that patron hasn't picked it up yet, the Online Catalog will report that it's "checked in."

If you are searching for Media Center items it's best to call ahead and make sure it's actually there before making a special trip.
